Yathāpi ruciraṃ pupphaṃ

Evaṃ subhāsitā vācā

Like a beautiful flower full of colour
and also fragrant, even so,
fruitful are the fair words
of one who practices them.

BUDDHIST VALUES & CHINESE NEW YEAR RITUALS

by Ven. Dr. Sobhita Thero

Chinese New Year marks the first day of the lunar calender. It is a joyous occasion celebrated by Chinese around the world, representing for them a new beginning. In the midst of all the festivities, we should ponder over the deep philosophical meaning contained in the customs and rituals observed during this occasion and the Buddhist values that they emphasize.
Before Chinese New Year, all old debts are cleared up. This brings a renewed sense of freedom and happiness (ananasukha) and allows one to face the new year with much courage. Chinese New Year is also a time when we discard the old and bring in the new as we do our "spring-cleaning" and purchase new clothes and shoes. Beyond the physical acts, such preparations symbolize the inner purification (parisuddhi) of our beings as old grudges are resolved as all anger is extinguished and all previous wrongs forgiven or forgotten. It is a time when peace, harmony and friendliness (metta) are restored among neighbours, friends and family members.

To welcome in the new year, we fastened charmed papers and red banners inscribed with well wishes written in gold paint to the door frames to ward off evil spirits. The true meaning of this is the prevention of evil thoughts from arising in ourselves and to wish happiness and joy (mudita) to others.

Deeper meaning and value could also be found in the distribution of sweets and delicacies during this period. Mandarin oranges and many other tasty things bear special significance. This tradition signifies the practice of giving (dana) and the spirit of cheerfulness (piya vacana), the foremost method of winning the hearts of others according to the Buddha.

On Chinese New Year's Eve, every family holds a grand reunion dinner attended by all family members from near and far. They come to pay their respects to their parents and demonstrate their filial piety and devotion. This reunion dinner is a very important tradition. In the communal meal, the scattered family members gather to reinforce their ties of solidarity and kinship. And of special importance here is the fostering of an invaluable Buddhist practice - that of honouring the elders (vuddhapacaya). This value is also found in the tradition of children paying respects to their parents during New Year. By this act, they ask for forgiveness from their parents. It is a time when everyone is appeased, happy and their thoughts purified. As a result, children receive blessings from the parents who, from the Buddhist point of view, are as virtuous as Brahma, the deity.

In summary, the many practices and traditions the we observe during the Chinese New Year season are more than mere rituals. They abound in meaningful values which will bring success for the coming year and for many years to come. Their preservation and continued practice would benefit future generations. May the spirit of Chinese New Year and all that it represents prevail, not just during this festive occasion but throughout the year.
